What’s Outside The Window?

December 19, 2009

I’m wondering this myself as I was grabbing my iPhone to take the picture. Zita’s such an interesting creature and Ex is pretty interesting himself too!

Trimming The Tree

December 16, 2009

So this is my first real traditional style Christmas tree in years. It seems I’ve killed the norfolk pines or other plants I’ve tried to make into Christmas trees the last few years so I figured it would be ok to buy one that’s already been hacked down. I guess I’m voting with my purchase it’s okey to harvest trees for the holidays but when it boils down to it I’m actually just helping some Christmas tree farmer so it’s all good!

Don’t make fun of the bows as I made them to keep the tree less commercial. The lights are LED so energy efficient and don’t burn hot so safer. The little braided angel is from my childhood and the tree stand we bought but it’s made super well and while isn’t über attractive, I think it’s fine without a skirt!

Zita and Picollo were not too impressed and refused to help out!

Back To The Stable And Back To Work!

December 14, 2009

I held off as long as possible before starting up projects but we’re updating our fields for the winter turnouts and giving the spring/summer fields a break so there has been fencing work to be done. The arena sat dormant for the months I was training in The Netherlands with Anky so it was interesting to see just how it settled and how the fall rains affected it. Ex bought a new John Deere that supports the Kieser drag by ABI very nicely. I’m looking forward to producing a webisode on their really neat tool as I call it a drag but it’s soooo much more than that! Here’s a shot of me with my maiden voyage driving the new tractor! Thnx Ex. It’s definitely a step up from the 1950s model 40!

I mention the tool cause it’s just so darn kewl. With the arena really hard packed after sitting for several months all I had to do is pull a few passes over with the Kieser tool cutting/leveling blade, scarfing teeth and finishing comb to turn it back up in perfect harmony of base to top fluff footing! Now I just can’t wait to get the entire arena 100% perfectly flat then meet with Edwin from the innovators at Attwood Equestrians Surfaces to talk about top performance horse footing!

What else has been on the stable to do list? Well the stalls are ready for the horses to step in them now. My tack room is climate controlled. The hay barn is water proof and the feed room is organized for efficiency! So we’re all set! I’m excited for Carrara to get back to the stable and to meet my new project horse from The Netherlands. He’s an adorable 4 year old gelding by Sir Donnerhall and should be a fun resell to work with! No presents needed Santa. This Christmas it’s great to just be home at our stable for training, training, training!

CEM In Southern Pines & Surf’s Up!

December 12, 2009

It took about 22 hours stopping every 2 hours to let Carrara rest and stand still quietly in the box but I would do it again to do it myself knowing first hand how well she was cared for as well as saving on the expense. She was a rockstar going on as always just walking right up and she was completely quiet less the VERY last stop about the last 5 minutes of her last non-moving break she pawed a couple of times. Seriously this horse has an amazing character! Here’s the front sign of her CEM where she’ll be for about the next 21 days. The people were super sweet there and the state vet fun to chat!

The last leg of my non-stop 2 day driving fest was almost over. I was heading home to the farm on the coast. I just thought this old car I saw at the petrol station was too cute! Surf’s up dude!

USDA Sealed Transport To CEM

December 11, 2009

So Carrara is being released from USDA quarantine in NY and the requirement is she must be transported in a USDA sealed and approved van, trailer, horse box to her CEM facility. They tell you this special sealed van transport will cost $800-1200 for the trip. Being as thrifty as possible, I do a bit of research and find out that my horse box can be approved by USDA and I can do it myself thus paying only the petrol and turnpike fees which I think will total to a couple hundred dollars. Hmfp! I guess they don’t want to eat into the pro transport peoples profits but hey, I’m down for saving where I can. Having horses is expensive! So I drive the Jeep and Brenderup to NY (about 14 hours going slow and stopping often to stay fresh). Here’s the USDA quarantine office. I didn’t take any pictures of the stall or horse area as I thought they might not be too keen on that and I just didn’t want to ask but it was nice and clean, they were very professional and although I don’t think they blanketed Carrara the entire few days she was there, she looked well and alert!

Here’s the special “seal” they put on the transport to ensure it’s not opened. They made it all sound so fancy when really it’s quite simple!

A quick shot of the USDA sign and we’re on the road to Southern Pines, NC to begin Carrara’s CEM!

Driving by day was great but I hit Baltimore about the time of their rush hour(s) traffic. I made a mental note to never travel through Baltimore (especially hauling) during their peak hours! Zoinks! It took 3 hours to get from Baltimore to Washington DC!

Red Sofa In Our Pasture

December 10, 2009

I was looking back through a series of photos taken with a local photographer in a shoot here over the summer and had to laugh at this sofa picture. It was Janice’s brilliant idea to juxtapose the sofa outside and wow how the bright red sofa contrasted with the green, green pasture! What a fun afternoon and evening!

Buying Into The Commercialism Of The Holidays

December 9, 2009

So it didn’t take long for me to embrace the commercialism of the holidays. I made a pumpkin pie and we bought a Christmas tree. Now the pumpkin pie? Well I didn’t have a pie plate so improvised with a skillet. I think this could be a big southern hit “Skillet Pie Cooking With HorseGirlTV” so Martha Stewart has nothing on me! Hah! Thnx for the idea Andrew! And yes, I make my own crusts. I used to have a bakery in Oregon back in the mid 90s!

Next it was on to the Christmas tree. I haven’t had a “real” Christmas tree since my small little one in Madrid in 2004 and Ex and I hadn’t ever had one together just opting for Norfolk pine or some tiny, tiny table model the past couple years. BUT!.. it was our first Christmas at the farm and we needed a hearty country tree. This is what we picked! Oh and we did try a couple of the local nurseries to support our local economy before heading to Lowes.

Selling my NEW Ovation and NEW Dehner Dress Riding Boots!

December 9, 2009

Okey! So some girls collect purses and shoes. I happen to collect the more fashionable yet function things like dress riding boots, saddles, bridles and the occasional fancy leather halter. But I have too many dress boots! Now some of you folks will say “Too many dress boots? Well that’s not possible.” but really there is too much of a good thing. Trying to decide which pairs to part with I am starting with my two brand NEW pairs, my Dehners (back zips) and my Ovations (side zips). I’ve just listed them on eBay so take a look when you have a sec and feel free to pass the links on.

The Dehners retail for $875.00! Yup, holy calfskin leather Batman! BUT… they are American made by a company with decades of experience in crafting quality boots for Americans and the world! I’m asking the Buy It Now on eBay at $249 but make me an offer!

The Ovations are a bit less steep retailing at $200 but still a great quality boot and the inside zips are pretty awesome. The Ovations do have a WAY low reserve. We’re talking over 65% off retail type reserve hint, hint! I didn’t take custom images of the Ovations as they are still wrapped up in their original tissue in the box but here’s a stock image.
